What to do in winter

Nothing says ‘winter magic’ like riding through the silent, snow-clad countryside in a horse-drawn sleigh, bundled up snugly against the cold. Another great winter pleasure is unwinding after a long day on the slopes with a steaming mug of mulled wine, with your back to the impressive tiled stove.

For those who like to work up an appetite with outdoor pursuits, the mountains around Schwaigerlehen-Berngarten are full of great winter opportunities:

Downhill skiing and snowboarding
in eithere are several resorts within easy reach. For example, take the ‘Panoramabahn’ cable car in Hollersbach to reach the Kitzbüheler Alpen resort (170 km of ski runs). Other resorts include Weißsee Glacier World, the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier in Kaprun, Wildkogel-Arena and many more.

Cross-country skiing
in the Salzachtal valley or at 1200 metres above sea level on the Hochmoor cross-country course.

Sledging
the Wildkogel sledging arena boasts a 14 km-long flood-lit sledge run.

Guided snowshoeing tours
into the Hohe Tauern valleys.
Ski touring and backcountry skiing on the Weißsee Glacier.
Tauern Spa in Kaprun, well-being for body and soul.

Another winter highlight is the ancient round dance performed on January the 6th by the ‘Tresterer’, a traditional folk dance group.
